17. A Brief
Introduction to the work: Harihara who is better known
for his Ragales on
the ancient devotees of Shiva in Tamilnadu and the Veerashaiva saints from Karnataka has also composed a
few Shatakas and a
Champu
Kavya. Girija
Kalyana is a Champu Kavya describing the penance undertaken by
Parvathi and the ordeals faced by her in her effort to marry Shiva.
This work is based on Kumarasambhava by
Kalidasa, Shivapurana and Linga
Purana. However the birth of Shanmukha
is not described. The epic focuses on the previous incarnation of
Parvathi as Sati, intense meditation (Tapas)
undertaken by Shiva after the passing away of his wife, (Sati) annihilation of Manmatha and the tryst between Shiva and
Parvathi. The book concludes with the wedding of Shiva and
Parvathi.
This work is
particularly celebrated for its description of the natural beauty of
Pampa Kshetra and intensely emotional portrayal
of many dramatic incidents. Harihara uses old Kannada
in preference to medieval Kannada in this work. In addition to that he has composed
a Champu Kavya which has
to be replete with metrical forms adapted from Sanskrit.
